It's not often we hear about completely new innovations in the Forex market, however the OpenBook or social trading system developed by eToro is one of those occasions. The concept is quite simple, but it allows ordinary traders to look over the shoulders of those producing the best results – and copy them, and most importantly learn from them.

It's really a social network that works in a way that is similar to facebook and twitter, or any other social network out there – people are in contact with other people, or traders are in contact with other traders. Anyone registered with a practise or live account at eToro can access the system and research, follow, contact and even copy any of the other traders.

It is a completely transparent system that allows traders to learn and exchange information with other traders whose trading record is displayed for everyone to see and scrutinize, there is nothing hidden. You know exactly what somebody's trading record is, what they have traded and when. This is not the case with other forums, information services and trading systems you can find online.

You can copy individual trades as you see them developing in the live trading feeds, or get detailed statistics of a traders results over a longer time period and choose to copy any number of their trades as they are implemented, (up to a maximum account balance of 20%)

OpenBook Screenshot

<sp></sp>

For those new to trading it allows you to get useful tips and advice, as well as understanding what is going on in the marketplace.

You are able to pick out traders or 'Gurus' and follow them and learn the way that they trade and think. It's a clean, quick and efficient means of sharing information and has the potential to really cut down on the learning time needed to get good at trading.

Benefits For experienced Traders

The systems also allows successful traders to set themselves up and allow other traders to follow them. This has multiple benefits.

Firstly a trader can get themselves known. They can clearly show all their trades and profits and quickly become recognized for their skill and expertise.

Next they are able to earn extra commissions and bonuses through the system after they are set up as a 'Guru' by having reached the necessary number of followers.

They are also able to integrate with other experienced traders, to share information and strategies, or just to network and gain further market sentiment and knowledge.

Finally traders are able to set up their own brand and website within the eToro social trading network, on copy.me. They are able to contribute articles to the eToro blog and really grow a web presence in FX.

The social trading feature is a very useful tool for new traders and experienced ones looking to build a brand, or make extra commissions. It has the potential make traders successful when previously they would have ended up going broke. I would say however, that it should primarily be a tool to help traders learn the FX marketplace and to master successful trading strategies, simply copying successful traders blindly is not the best method for long term success in the FX marketplace.

Traders are able to access the OpenBook systems from a real, or virtual account as they can with any of the other features of the eToro site.

Click Here to visit the eToro website.

Was kommt als nächstes?

Traditionally Forex is not about investment, it is about getting business done. Companies build products and export them to other countries, so trade creates the need to exchange countries. So when China sends a shipload of electronics to the USA, it must be paid for and US dollars are exchanged for Chinese Yuan. The same is true when governments sells bonds to overseas buyers, or those same buyers invest in the stock markets of foreign countries.

The Forex market is huge with around $3 billion be traded daily. 1971 saw the end of the Bretton Woods Agreement, or 'Gold Standard' in which the USA pegged the dollar to gold at around $35 an ounce following the end of WW II, and many worldwide currencies pegged themselves to the US dollar. Since then, most of the worlds currencies have been freely floated. This means that their value is decided by supply and demand. So, basically how much of a particular currency is bought, or sold. If more of a currency is bought, say for example US dollars then it's value will rise. If more is sold then it's value will fall.

However, it's important to understand that a currency can only have a value relative to another currency. The USD dollar will be quoted in terms of it's exchange rate against another currency, for example the GBP, Japanese Yen or Canadian Dollar. So, its value is always relative to whatever other currency it is being quoted with.

This is also an important point to consider when trading currencies. For example, if a trader decides that the USD is strong and wants to buy USD, he, or she can only buy USD against another currency, for example USD/GBP, or USD/CAD. Therefore traders will often look to trade a strong currency against the weakest one relatively speaking. For example there is good economic news about the USA, so whilst looking to buy USD, a trader will find another currency that is currently the 'weakest' relative to the dollar.

Freely floating currencies have important economic ramifications, currencies tend to get weaker when a country's economy is weak and stronger when it is doing better. The adjustments in currency value can allow a country to become more competitive internationally, in more difficult times.

This situation also created one in which investors and banks speculated on the future movement, initially it was only institutions with large capitalization that were able to speculate in the markets. However, that has now changed and in the present world virtually anyone has the capability to start trading in the FX marketplace.

Another key feature of the Forex marketplace is that it is an over-the-counter (OTC) market. This means that it is not traded on an exchange, such as a stock market is. That means it is not regulated. Potential investors need to understand the impact of this that effectively there is no overseeing body, so that should their trades ever come to some sort of dispute then they will have no guaranteed means of resolving them.

The transactions, or exchange of currency predominantly take place between large banks that are free to trade currencies amongst each other at whatever rate they can agree on. To make this system easier the Electronic Broking System (EBS) was developed to allow those wishing to trade a way to be able to see what rates they can deal at. There was also an additional system created by Reuters (D2). Generally the one that is chosen depnds on the currency pairs that need to be traded EBS is predominantly used for EUR/USD, USD/JPY, EUR/JPY, USD/CHF and EUR/CHF, with Reuters D2 being used for the other currency pairs. Whilst these systems offer a central pricing system, they are not an exchange.

Retail Forex brokers act as market makers. The traders who use them do not trade directly in the interbank market place, they trade at market rates offered by their FX broker which are based on the rates in the interbank marketplace. Often Forex brokers will hedge their risk in the interbank marketplace, however their exact risk models will change from broker to broker.

This is also very important for a retail trader to understand, because it can directly affect their trading activity and the likelihood of success. Check out the article on the The Best Forex Brokers, to get a better idea…
